Microsoft’s Majorana 1 is the world’s first quantum chip powered by a new Topological Core architecture which is a breakthrough in the field of quantum computing. Now complex problems can be solved in years rather than decades.
Quantum computers and Topoconductors-
A quantum computer does not work like traditional computers which use bits (0 and 1), they use qubits. Qubits can be in multiple states at the same time because of quantum superpositions. Bt qubits are very unstable because any disturbance makes them lose all the information they are holding before the computation is completed.
Mjorana 1 chip uses topoconductors, a new type of material, which can make more stable qubits which reduces the need for error correction which is a big problem in quantum computing. Topoconductors can create a new state of matter, not solid, gases or liquids but a different topological state to create more stable qubits.

Structure of the Majorana chip:-
The chip combines Indium, Arsenide and Aluminium. These materials were designed and fabricated atom by atom by Microsoft to minimize error and ensure reliability for quantum operations.
Topological core of the quantum chip has many advantages as well-
1. More stable qubits- topological qubits are far more stable they are less likely to lose information because of external disturbance, which reduces the tendency of errors
2. More qubits in less space- the topological architecture enables the chip to have upto a million qubits, in such a small space, which was needed to solve larger problems.
3. Simplified Control- It uses a digital control system that simplifies qubit operations, unlike traditional analog methods.
Recognition by DARPA:-
The Majorana 1 is being supported by the U.S. Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency which has selected Microsoft’s approach as one of the 2 strategies of making a quantum computer by the next decade.
Majorana 1 chip marks a turning point in quantum computing as it can solve problems which traditional computers can’t. Its stability and scalability is a big step towards making a quantum computer.
